The trend of women becoming involved in politics and the public sector, agitating for the vote, and participating in revolutionary activities in Ireland started some time prior to the Irish War of Independence (1919 – 1921) and the Irish Civil War (1921 – 1923). We will discuss events leading up to and including this seminal event in the early part of the 20th century and how these events shaped the perspective of men and women living in Ireland during these turbulent times.
